Top made from a scarf

In 2014 Sandy Adsett created this art for a scarf which was sold in the shop at the MTG in Hawkes Bay at the time of the exhibition, Whetu Tirikatene-Sullivan – Travel in Style. Sandy had made many fabric designs for Whetu over the years that she was the Labour MP for Southern Māori (1967-1996) and the Minister of Tourism and Minister for the Environment in the third Labour Government. Not only was Whetu New Zealand’s first Māori woman cabinet minister, she was also a fashionable woman and a strong supporter of Māori artists and designers. Doris de Pont bought the scarf at the exhibition but not being a scarf wearer she made it into a simple top that better suits her style.
