Velvet hat trimmed with ostrich feathers

Womenswear in the 1880s was most marked by the weightiness of its embellishments with extensive use of trims. For millinery, it was often a confection of glass beads, ribbons, flowers, lace, and a gruesome amount of feathers, sometimes including whole taxidermied birds.
