New Zealand Fashion Museum · 'to fashion' Intro - Tayi Tibble

I am:

Tayi Tibble, 26. I am an indigenous poet and writer from Te Whanganui a Tara, Aotearoa. My iwi are Te Whānau ā Apanui and Ngāti Porou. I am the author of two books, Poukahangatus (2018) and Rangikura (2021). I work as a publicist at Te Herenga Waka University Press.

I am wearing:

I'm wearing a plain ribbed cotton t-shirt and a vintage Jean Paul Gaultier skirt from the 90s that my bf bought me for Christmas from a French woman via Ebay. It has a a moko on it, so being gifted it felt like reclamation lol. My taonga is greenstone gifted to me from the team at the Pukeahu War Memorial after I delivered a poem at the dawn service a few years ago and I'm obsessed with the pale cord. The shoes I am wearing are my bestie Pelham's, which I wore home after a party and haven't returned. My gold chain choker is Pelham's too. My bracelets are a random assortment I've been collecting, mostly second hand or given to me. My hoops are classic cheap gold imitation bamboo hoops. My bag is from Prada f/w 2006. It's hobo style, with a fox fur trim and shearling applique. I bought it for myself for my 26th birthday. Finally, no outfit is complete without scent. I'm wearing Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream and Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford.
