String of pearls floral silk dress
This bias cut silk dress from Karen Walker's Spring/Summer 2000 collection entitled Etiquette which was presented at Australian Fashion Week. It sports the signature motif of a trompe l'oeil style screen print of a broken pearl necklace, which featured heavily in this collection on a variety of dress styles as well as t shirts.
The broken string of pearls print was created by Katie Lockhart and Mikhail Gherman, Karen Walker’s creative director. Here, this necklace print is juxtaposed with a vintage inspired floral reminiscent of an earlier time period, further alluding to the broader theme of the collection, which questions notions of propriety and the symbols associated with what it means to be demure and feminine.
Another dress from this collection, which also features this print resides in Te Papa's collection, and can be viewed here.
