James Dobson’s costume for the Intellectual Fashion Show 2016 is an interpretation of June Black's 'Costume for gathering strength before once more plunging into the fray'. This garment is from his Jimmy D Was Here collection, autumn/winter 2016. "For me I am always looking back to look forward. The collection this 'costume' is from was very autobiographical, it came off the back of a ten year retrospective and a breakup. I looked back at my own archive, and at my earliest fashion memories - designers like Margiela and Demeulemeester who in my mind paved the way for the intellectual style of fashion I’m still obsessed with, and the 'New Zealand Four' that inspired me to dive into the fashion world. This collection was a time of re-focus, of paying homage to precedents, and of empowerment."
