Puritan wool ponte fitted jacket, 1978

In the early 1970s, Nancy and Arthur Delaney, together with Geoff Rendell opened a new business, Puritan, in premises on Graham Street in central Auckland. This Puritan jacket is made from ponte - a double knit material that is two stocking stitch knitted fabrics which have been joined together back to back in the knitting process. This gives the cloth a double face and reduces its stretch qualities but increases its stability which makes it suitable for more structured clothing such as jackets and pants. While it can be knitted in various yarns and weights this example is in wool and has a sturdy structure. The closely fitted jacket takes advantage of ponte's qualities. It is tailored while the material allows for ease of movement.
