Orchid dress

Kerrie Hughes designed this dress in 1984, not long after her return to Wellington from Auckland. She had recently closed her business Svelt that she owned with Di Jennings. That same year, Kerrie won a Highly Commended award in the Benson & Hedges Fashion Design Awards and in two years later, she won a Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council and Craft Council grant to study the costume collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum and the V&A in London.
