Midnight lace gown

Robert Ryan was 20 years old when he won the Gown of the Year competition in 1961 with this dress, called Midnight lace. Robert’s mother Lea Draysey won the competition in 1958. Midnight lace was made from dark blue velvet and featured a ruched skirt panel and a comet tail of white guipure lace flowers sparked with diamante. The dress was modelled by Ann Lynch.
