Freddy Allen Microdot red minidress, 1970s

The classic A-line silhouette of this dress is an example of the simple, geometric inspired shapes that dominated youth style in the late 60s and early 70s. Paired with the inclusion of the polka-dot texture of the bodice and the small buttons at the neckline, it presents a take on more childish styles, updated for the modern young woman.

Freddy Allen as a label was named after its owner Fred Allen; captain, and later coach of the All Blacks before rugby was a professional sport. Players - even All Blacks - had to earn an income elsewhere and Fred juggled his sporting career with ownership of a women's clothing label.
