Lurex dress with faux pockets

Three years after he immigrated to Dannevirke from Lebanon, Norman Alexander opened a retail store called The Fashion. A decade later, in the late 1930s, he opened a small garment factory where he designed womenswear under the label Silvalyne Gowns. Norman sold his 'made-in-Dannevirke' garments to numerous outlets across New Zealand and by 1945 he had opened a new branch store, established on Broadway, in the much larger town of Palmerston North. He was still designing in the 1960s when this dress was made.
