Lela Jacobs Karangahape Rd print silk georgette dress, 2016

This Lela Jacobs silk georgette long sleeved tunic dress features an experimental digital print featuring an aerial photograph which first appeared as the central focus of Ann Shelton's piece called 'K Hole' from the year 2000.

This dress was created as a collaboration that was available for purchase at the Auckland Art Gallery for Ann's survey show DARK MATTER, which ran from Sat 26 Nov 2016 — Mon 17 Apr 2017 and curated by Dr Zara Stanhope.

Barbara Holloway, contributor of this garment, was Town Manager for The Karangahape Road Business Association from Oct 2004 - Nov 2015. This dress and its many inferences to this area, not only because of the provenance and subject matter of the print, but also thanks to the locale in which it was made, draws a personal connection that goes beyond a superficial appreciation. Also pictured is a Lela Jacobs necklace featuring a 3d printed metal shank with long strands of natural horsehair, which are often worn together.

The NZFM photographed this dress and necklace at our Popup photography session in October 2024 which was part of our Hui Auaha o Aotearoa Open Day.
