KNIT: original fashion created from yarn

8-31 August 2025

KNIT isn't just about knitting; it's a comprehensive celebration of all yarn-based fashion creation that bridges the gap between age-old craftsmanship and contemporary trends, and showcases the enduring appeal of knitting, crochet, macrame, and weaving in today's world.

The exhibition presented a rich tapestry of homemade fashion garments, historical fashion illustrations, photographs, and patterns, each telling stories of individual expression and evolving trends. We centered the stories, skills, and experiences of local yarn creatives to create a community-driven and interactive experience.

KNIT wasn't just about looking; it invited participation.

Responding to a growing interest in, and value attributed to, craft skills within the high fashion sector and among art and design practitioners and young creatives, we offered a teaching and activity space within the exhibition. A rich and varied public program of workshops, drop-in activities, and expert sessions was developed in collaboration with craft practitioners, artists, designers, and retailers. These were tailored to welcome and engage visitors, regardless of their skill level.

A durational project, the creation of a community blanket made of peggy squares, welcomed contributions from across the motu, while a daily 'yarning circle' provided a space for people to work on their own yarn crafting projects and connect through a relaxed yarn with other makers.

Curated by Doris de Pont and Nathalie Gregory.
