Jules Nelson wedding dress worn by Mairehau Cole, 1953

This 1950s wedding dress, worn by Mairehau Tui Cole (neé Taua) on her and Colin's wedding day is one of the many garments owned by the Cole-McCondach family, and has been documented and editorially shot as part of a project undertaken by photographer Lily McCondach, Colin Cole's grand-niece.

This was made in 1953 by their friend Jules Nelson, and features a high neckline, long dolman sleeves, a pointed waistline and a rounded train that comes to a slight point. The main fabric looks to be a rayon or acetate jacquard satin, and the bodice and sleeves feature a nylon lace overlay. An unusual cape-like design feature fastens across the décolletage, draps over the shoulders and finishes in the sleeve at the elbow.
