Inside the Closet: Fashion through the drag lens
Exhibition
What does it take to fashion a drag persona? The performance art form is a cocktail of fabulousness and facade, one that demonstrates the transformative power of fashion. While the drag has a distinctive paradigm, it’s also highly individualised, expressed through outfits, wigs and makeup to tell a unique story.
Visit Britomart and step inside the fabulous world where drag meets fashion. This outdoor exhibition displayed on Britomart’s Pavilion Panels features life-size portraits of 13 remarkable performers – from legendary K Road queens to rising stars, drag kings to TikTok sensations – each wearing a colour from the Pride Progress flag.
Discover the artistry, creativity, and incredible mahi behind every look, from hand-sewn costumes to custom couture. Through stunning photography by Denise Baynham and personal stories from each performer, explore how drag performers transform identity through fashion, one show-stopping outfit at a time.
Co-curated by NZ photographer Denise Baynham and drag pioneer Edward Cowley (Buckwheat), this exhibition celebrates the heart of drag: self-expression, community, and the love that goes into every transformation. You will find the Pavilion Panels located on Te Ara Tāhuhu Walkway, spanning Gore, Galway, Commerce and Tyler Street. Wander through this leafy oasis in the heart of Britomart at your leisure and immerse yourself in the stories, style, and soul of Aotearoa's drag community.
