Hand-printed dress with copper buttons
Helen Edwards and her mother Cecily Ann Buchanan bought Fanny Buss dresses before Helen's wedding in March 1973. Maureen Hitchings sold them at the ‘Cellar Crafts and Exhibitions Gallery’, located in the basement of jewellery firm Dawsons Limited in Dunedin’s Princes Street. Maureen’s discerning eye and artistic connections provided the gallery with its reputation for quality. This Fanny Buss dress was worn by Cecily, as mother of the bride. Helen notes that they also received many wedding presents, "still of practical and artistic value", purchased from the shop she knew as 'Dawson’s Basement'. "It is not surprising so many presents came from there, as Michael Hitchings, the Hocken Librarian, was my boss, and guests with library connections chose to visit Maureen for help with their selections."
