Evening gown with beaded appliqué
Fashionbilt was one of the labels made by Wellington manufacturers, Fashions Ltd. When the journalist, O N Gillespie, visited in 1939 there were about 200 people working in the Wellington factory in 1939. The work was "divided into two sections, the silk fabric manufacture, and the making of clothes from heavier materials". This division, between dressmaking and tailoring, is a characteristic we see in couture houses and was translated by Fashions Ltd to their manufacturing.

The gown has a swathe of pleats through the waist that form two panels at the back that fall down to the hemline. The beaded trim at the neck has been hand stitched onto the garment.
