Evening gown & cape with plissé pleats

In 1965, the people of Taranaki purchased a gown for Jan Furness (nee Barkley) to wear in the Miss New Zealand contest. Jan was 18 years old when she won the Miss Taranaki contest and went to Tarantella Boutique in Auckland to select an evening gown to wear in the contest. The event was sponsored by the Wool Board so the gown had to be made from wool. She also wore the gown as the New Zealand representative in the Miss International contest held in Long Beach, California. Since then, Jan has worn the gown many times - to balls in the late 1960s, and many occasions and televised events. The gown, designed by Joan Talbot of Tarantella, won the Golden Shears Awards in 1964.
