It was the complaints of male friends about the lack of good menswear options in Wellington that provided the impetus for Clare Bowden and Fiona to join together to start a the menswear label Mandatory. This garment is their interpretation of artist June Black's metaphorical costume - 'Costume in which to keep from flying apart in every direction'.
