Chris Knox's t-shirt & jandals
Chris Knox is regarded as one of New Zealand music’s greats. A pioneer in the punk scene here he was a founder of the Flying Nun music label and is the writer of the 13th best New Zealand song of all time, 'Not Given Lightly', according to APRA (Australasian Performers Right Association). So what uniform is befitting of a performing artist of such stature? A black shirt with the sleeves ripped out, black stubbies and jandals, of course. His explanation of his now iconic fashion choice is that "it’s comfortable and cool, but not as 'in' cool". Since discovering sleeveless t-shirts on the racks he has not even had to rip the sleeves out himself. An anti-fashion statement and as straightforward as his music. Read more about wearing the colour black in the New Zealand Fashion Museum publication Black: The history of black in fashion, society and culture in New Zealand.
