Bendon black frilled nylon negligeé, 1960s
Adele Dallimore (nee Smith) worked for Bendon as a house model from 1968 to 1971. This is one of the garments she acquired during her time with them.
Made of a sheer knitted Bri-Nylon, this mini-length slip features vertically sewn gathered frills all over out of the self fabric as a fun and flirty detail which also helps to create a layering that offsets the sheer nature of the fabric in its flat form. Horizontal rows of this frill detail also line the hem. This suggests that this would be worn as sleepwear as opposed to an undergarment, and the A-line silhouette mirrors more the more voluminous babydoll pyjamas popular in the 1950s and early 1960s.
The straps and bow details at the shoulder are made of a co-ordinating black synthetic satin ribbon.
The NZFM photographed this garment at our Popup photography session in October 2024 which was part of our Hui Auaha o Aotearoa Open Day.
