Blue dress with sari drape front

This blue Colin Cole dress has a sari drape front with a braided print trim. The fabric has been hand-dyed. Imports of fabric were limited by a system that required a licence and this restricted the options for designers who were in search of something original. The dress was owned by Helen Lillian Shaw who was a gifted short story writer, poet and editor. Aside from her writing she was known for her good looks and distinctive style, she favoured dressing simply often in skirts and high-necked Victorian blouses.
